I [ART] MARFA: JULIE SPEED
In 2014, Franco-American director couple Sébastien Carayol and Katie Callan set their camera in Marfa, Texas. Commissioned by French/German network ARTE, their art/documentary series I ART MARFA 's aim was to examine the heritage of Donald Judd in town--a presence so indelible, it unexpectedly turned this isolated corner of Texas into an international art hub.
Through five portraits, they followed five notable Marfians in their daily adventures, questioning the idea of living, thriving and creating in this seemingly remote locale - and how Marfa changed their lives.
In this episode of I [ART] MARFA, provocative female artist Julie Speed unveils the former prison that was to become her studio, and explains her unlikely common grounds with Judd - while pondering the influence of the surrounding landscape on her works.
